Why Choose Higher Farm Riding School

You have the option to choose between a one-hour session or a 30 minute session, which includes the time for mounting, dismounting, and returning the horses to their barn.

For new riders, we provide assistance in learning how to fetch your pony from the yard, check and adjust your tack, mount safely, sit in a balanced position, and handle the reins correctly.

Additionally, we will guide you in returning your horse safely after riding until you are comfortable doing so independently. Beginners may have a leader accompany them, and parents or guardians may be asked to lead or be led by their coach initially.

You can schedule group lessons at regular intervals each week or opt for a more flexible riding schedule. We offer a variety of group lessons tailored to different abilities and age groups.

Private or shared private lessons are available for those seeking more individualized attention or focusing on specific areas of improvement. Riding frequency directly impacts your progress, and we recommend regular attendance to advance quickly. Group lessons are progressive, and you will be moved to the next suitable group when deemed appropriate. If you prefer to stay with a specific coach, private lessons may be necessary.

We have multiple lessons at similar levels led by different instructors, allowing you to find a coach that aligns with your learning style. Do not hesitate to request a change in lessons until you find the perfect fit.

Weight Limit

Horses generously carry us on their backs, and it is our responsibility to ensure their comfort. Please note that in the interests of animal welfare, our weight limit for horse riding is 12 stone or 76 kgs (fully dressed with boots and a riding hat).

It can be embarrassing for us and for you, to have to ask you to stand on the scales when you arrive, so please weigh yourself at home in your riding gear, before booking.

What to expect

Bookings

To secure your spot for a riding lesson, you have the option to book online at any time or call us at 01477 462001 during office hours. Our team is available to provide guidance on the best lesson for your needs. We highly recommend booking private lessons well in advance, as time slots are limited, especially on weekends and during school holidays when demand is high.

For group lessons, we suggest booking at least one week ahead. However, last-minute spaces may be available, so it's worth contacting us or checking online for availability.

If you need help selecting the right lesson, feel free to reach out to us by phone or visit our reception area for a personalized consultation.

When booking online, lesson times will be displayed for you to choose from. For confirmation of riding lesson times or events, please call 01477 462001. If you encounter any difficulties with booking online, we can assist you over the phone if you are registered in our system. Additionally, you can book lessons for the following week at our reception before you depart. Thank you for choosing our services, and we look forward to seeing you soon.

Arrival

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, we kindly request that you arrive slightly before your scheduled lesson time. Please be aware that we may not be able to accommodate late arrivals by extending the lesson time.

Upon arrival, please check in at reception where we will assist you in checking the safety of your hat and boots, or provide you with our own if needed.

At the start of your lesson, we will guide you in retrieving your horse from the stable, mounting, and adjusting the tack safely. Once you feel comfortable with these tasks, we will encourage you to become more independent in your riding.

Remember to relax and have fun during your lesson. Riding should be an enjoyable experience, so please do not hesitate to ask any questions if you are unsure about anything. Additionally, please inform your coach if you encounter any difficulties during the lesson.

Tips for Maximizing Your Lesson Experience

 1. Communicate with your coach. Be open and honest about your abilities, long-term and short-term goals, and what you hope to achieve from your lessons.

 2. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Seek clarification before and during your ride if needed. Your coach is there to help and alleviate any concerns you may have.

 3. Remember, everyone starts as a beginner. There are no silly questions, especially when it comes to learning technical terms.

 4. Schedule lessons regularly to progress more quickly.

 5. Arrive on time and in a calm state of mind. Horses respond better to a relaxed environment, and you will learn more effectively when you are focused.

 6. Ride a variety of horses to learn from each one's unique personality and skills.

 7. Step out of your comfort zone. Your coach is there to guide you through new experiences and help you progress.

8. Take notes and summarize what you've learned after each lesson. Keeping a journal can help you track your progress and remember key points for future rides

9. Physical Fitness is crucial for improving your riding skills. If your coach recommends exercises to enhance your balance and coordination off the horse, make sure to incorporate them into your routine. Engaging in cross-training activities such as yoga, Pilates, dance, gymnastics, or martial arts can also benefit your riding abilities by enhancing your balance.

10. Don't be too hard on yourself if you encounter challenges along the way. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and perfection is unattainable for both horse and rider. Focus on doing your best and highlight the positives in your performance.

If you have a rough day, don't hesitate to discuss it with your coach. Together, you can develop a positive plan to address any issues and improve in your next lesson.
