Why Choose Higher Farm Riding School

Riders can choose between 30-minute or one-hour sessions, which include time for mounting, dismounting, and returning your horse to the stable.

For new riders, our friendly instructors provide hands-on guidance in every step — from bringing your pony from the yard and checking your tack, to mounting safely, developing a balanced seat, and learning correct rein handling.

We’ll also support you in safely returning your horse after your ride until you feel confident managing this independently. Beginners may have a leader to assist them during lessons, and parents or guardians may be invited to help lead under the supervision of our coaches.

You can choose to attend group lessons on a regular weekly schedule or enjoy a more flexible riding arrangement to suit your availability. We offer a range of group lessons designed for different ages and ability levels, ensuring that every rider receives the right balance of challenge and support.

For those seeking more focused instruction, private and shared private lessons are available. These sessions are ideal for riders who wish to work on specific skills, build confidence, or receive more personalized feedback.

Consistent riding is key to progress, so we recommend attending lessons regularly to develop your skills effectively. Our group lessons are progressive, and riders are advanced to the next level when ready. If you prefer to continue training with a particular coach, we recommend booking private lessons to ensure consistency.

We offer multiple lessons at similar levels, each led by different instructors, so you can find a coach whose teaching style best suits you. Please don’t hesitate to request a change of group or instructor — we want every rider to feel comfortable, confident, and well-supported.

Weight Limit

Our horses and ponies work hard to provide enjoyable experiences for all our riders, and their well-being is always our top priority. To ensure their comfort and safety, we have a weight limit of 12 stone (76 kg), measured fully dressed in riding gear, including boots and helmet.

We kindly ask all riders to check their weight at home before booking, as it can be uncomfortable for both parties if we need to verify this on arrival. Please note that no refunds will be issued to riders who attend and exceed the weight limit.

Thank you for helping us care for our horses and maintain the highest standards of welfare.

What to expect

Bookings

To secure your spot for a riding lesson, you can book online at any time via our booking system or call us during office hours on 01477 462001 or mobile 07716 485095. Our team is always happy to provide guidance and help you choose the lesson that best suits your needs.

We recommend booking private lessons well in advance, as availability is limited, particularly on weekends and during school holidays. For group lessons, we suggest booking at least one week ahead. Please call 01477 462001 or 07716 485095.

If you encounter any difficulties with online booking, we can assist you over the phone, provided you are registered in our system. Additionally, you may book lessons for the following week with our staff before you leave.

Arrival

To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, we kindly ask that you arrive a few minutes before your scheduled lesson. Please note that late arrivals may not be accommodated, and lesson times cannot be extended.

Upon arrival, please check in at the yard with our team leader. Our staff will assist in checking the safety of your hat and boots or provide suitable equipment if needed.

At the start of your lesson, your instructor will guide you in retrieving your horse from the stable, mounting safely, and adjusting your tack correctly. As you gain confidence, we encourage you to take a more independent role in your riding.

Most importantly, relax and enjoy your lesson. Riding should be a fun and rewarding experience, so please ask questions if you are unsure about anything, and inform your coach if you encounter any difficulties — we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Tips for Maximizing Your Lesson Experience

 1. Communicate with your coach. Be open and honest about your abilities, long-term and short-term goals, and what you hope to achieve from your lessons.

 2. Don't be afraid to ask questions. Seek clarification before and during your ride if needed. Your coach is there to help and alleviate any concerns you may have.

 3. Remember, everyone starts as a beginner. There are no silly questions, especially when it comes to learning technical terms.

 4. Schedule lessons regularly to progress more quickly.

 5. Arrive on time and in a calm state of mind. Horses respond better to a relaxed environment, and you will learn more effectively when you are focused.

 6. Ride a variety of horses to learn from each one's unique personality and skills.

 7. Step out of your comfort zone. Your coach is there to guide you through new experiences and help you progress.

8. Take notes and summarize what you've learned after each lesson. Keeping a journal can help you track your progress and remember key points for future rides

9. Physical Fitness is crucial for improving your riding skills. If your coach recommends exercises to enhance your balance and coordination off the horse, make sure to incorporate them into your routine. Engaging in cross-training activities such as yoga, Pilates, dance, gymnastics, or martial arts can also benefit your riding abilities by enhancing your balance.

10. Don't be too hard on yourself if you encounter challenges along the way. Mistakes are a natural part of the learning process, and perfection is unattainable for both horse and rider. Focus on doing your best and highlight the positives in your performance.

If you have a rough day, don't hesitate to discuss it with your coach. Together, you can develop a positive plan to address any issues and improve in your next lesson.
